What to Expect When You Attend Our Clinic For Your Scan

There will always be present in our scan rooms an experienced sonographer who performs the scan and a clinic assistant who will look after you and help the sonographer during the scan.

You will always be welcomed into our scan rooms and introduced to both the sonographer and clinic assistant who will then confirm your identity.
Dependent on what type of scan you are having you may be asked to lay or sit on a couch and expose the part of your body that is to be scanned. Warmed Gel will be placed either directly the body area to be scanned or put on the probe, your clothes will be protected by tissue before the scan. The sonographer performing the scan will explain what they will be doing and will often ask questions about why you are having the scan. During the scan the sonographer will need to concentrate and because of this they may be quiet during the scan.

Ultrasound Scan Instructions and Reporting Process

For some scan types you may be asked to hold your breath to enable the sonographer to visualise anatomy clearly, sometimes you will also be asked to turn on your side or move into different positions to enable the sonographer to see anatomy from different angles. Please listen to the instructions given so that we can obtain clear images which will help the sonographer with diagnosis of any pathology found.

At the end of the scan the sonographer may explain what they have found but this may be dependent on circumstances as sometimes the sonographer will require a second opinion from a colleague. If there was nothing found on the scan of concern, then the sonographer will be able to reassure you of this. Your report will be back with your GP within 24 to 48 hours but, we always request that you do not contact your GP for at least a week, this gives the surgery time to process your report ready for the GP to view.
